2017/18 AAPS Budget is Approved

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (June 21, 2017): Forsythe Middle School, 1655 Newport Rd

The Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) Board of Education (BOE) trustees will vote themselves into executive session at 5:00 PM this evening, citing attorney/client privilege and for “strategy and negotiation sessions connected with the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement.” Executive sessions are closed to the public. The regular meeting begins at 7:00 PM.

The meeting will begin with special recognition of Ken Fischer, the director of University Musical Society (UMS). Fischer will retire from UMS on June 30, 2017. Glenn Nelson, former AAPS trustee, will also be recognized.

The second public hearing on the 2017-18 budget will be held. This is a chance for the public to comment directly on the budget, distinct from the regular public commentary, which will also be held. No members of the public spoke at the first public hearing on June 14.

Three information items will be presented. The Culture and Climate Annual Report will be given. Superintendent Jeanice Swift will given an update on Fall 2017 Enrollment. There will also be an update on Summer Enrichment from Rec & Ed. [Ed. note: These items have been removed from the agenda and will be presented at a meeting in the future.]

The trustees will hear several first briefing items: the MHSSA Membership Renewal for the 2017/18 School Year; College and Career Planning – Naviance Platform; Sinking Fund Paving and Concrete Projects; Playgrounds; Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee (SHEAC) Annual Report and Recommendations; New Draft Policy 5010 – Non Discrimination; and New Draft Policy 5011 – Transgender and Gender Non Conforming Students.

Four items are up for second briefing: Tech Bond Computer Purchase; Summer Gym Floor Restorations; Allen Renovations Phase II – Structural Steel and Roofing: Thermal and Moisture Upgrades.

Those four items will be on the consent agenda, which the trustees will vote on.

In addition to voting on the consent agenda, board action will be taken on two issues. The trustees will vote to approve the 2016/17 Final Budget Amendment. they will also vote to approve the 2017/18 Budget.

AAPS Board Hears Intervention Specialist, Culture & Climate Reports

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (June 29, 2016): Forsythe Middle School, 1655 Newport Rd

The board is holding an executive session at 5:30 PM, for the purposes of attorney/client privilege, negotiations, and superintendent evaluation.

During the regular meeting, beginning at 7:00 PM, the trustees will first take a board action of ratifying the remaining employment agreements. Agreements for AAEA, AAEA-Paraprofessionals, and AAEA-Office Professionals were ratified at the June 16 meeting. 

There will be special recognition of the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses.

The trustees will hear the annual climate and culture report, a report on the Intervention Specialist program, and the superintendent 360 evaluation.

First briefings will be on the local wellness policy update, a revision to Policy 3760 – Transportation, and several bid recommendations for maintenance work, including asphalt paving, painting, roof replacement, and wood floor refinishing.

There will be a special briefing item on a GCA contract amendment. GCA is the company the district outsourced to for janitorial work.

Second briefings will be on the Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee (SHEAC) report and recommendations, the Rec & Ed contracts, the inventory resource management system recommendation, and the MHSAA membership renewal for the 2016/17 school year.

Voting will be on the Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee (SHEAC) report and recommendations, the Rec & Ed contracts, the inventory resource management system recommendation, the MHSAA membership renewal for the 2016/17 school year, and the GCA contract amendment.

In addition, the trustees will vote to adopt a resolution to approve summer 2016 purchasing and hiring authority for Superintendent Jeanice Swift. This is routine authority given to the district superintendent to make purchases during the summer while the board is not in session.

AAPS Board Passes 2016-17 Budget; Ratifies Teacher Contracts

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (June 15, 2016): Forsythe Middle School, 1655 Newport Rd

The board is holding an executive session at 5:30 PM, for the purposes of attorney/client privilege and negotiations.

Immediately following, a study session on Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) programming will be held. Study sessions are used by the trustees to learn more about a specific topic.

During the regular meeting, beginning at 7:00 PM, the trustees will first hold a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the Orlando shooting. There will be special recognition of the recipient of the Envision Michigan Scholarship Award, presented by Senator Rebecca Warren, as well as of the Project Lead the Way Master Teachers.

The trustees will hear the monthly budget monitoring report for the month of May. The annual culture and climate report will also be presented.

First briefings will be on the Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee (SHEAC) report and recommendations, the Rec & Ed contracts, the inventory resource management system recommendation, 2016 summer facilities work, and the MHSAA membership renewal for the 2016/17 school year.

Second briefings will be on Mitchell Elementary Expansion furniture purchase, the 2016/17 millage resolution, the 2015-16 final budget amendment, and the 2016-17 proposed budget.

The trustees are holding a second public hearing on the 2016-17 budget, after there was some concern voiced by members of the public that there hadn’t been enough time to view the proposed budget before the first public hearing.

Voting will be on the 2016-17 millage resolution, the 2015-16 final budget amendment, the 2016-17 proposed budget, and the Mitchell Expansion furniture purchases. As of 2:39 PM, there is a place holder on the consent agenda for a “new agenda item,” which potentially could be the ratification of the Ann Arbor Education Association (AAEA) contract agreement. Voting on the contract ended this morning for members of AAEA.

The board will also be looking at the 2016-17 proposed board meeting calendar.
