Graduation Rate at 90%; Modular Expansion at Mitchell, Wines

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (March 7, 2018): Forsythe Middle School, 1655 Newport Rd

The Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) Board of Education (BOE) trustees will vote themselves into executive session at 5:30 PM this evening, citing attorney/client privilege. Executive sessions are closed to the public. The regular meeting begins at 7:00 PM. [[AnnArbivore will not be providing live coverage of this meeting. I am coming down with something and need to stay at home. You can watch the meeting live on CTN.]]

Tonight’s meeting will begin with special commentary on the Ray Detter Local History Award.

Superintendent Jeanice Swift will present the 2017 Graduation Rate Annual Report as an information item. No board action is taken on information items.

The trustees will hear one first briefing item: 2015 Bond Furniture Purchase for Slauson and Tappan Middle Schools. [A second item had been removed from the agenda, but was placed back on after this writing. That item: Modular Expansion: Mitchell & Wines Elementary Schools].

Four items are up for second briefing. That includes a Musical Instrument Purchase; Pioneer Band Uniform Purchase; School Auditorium Sound System Purchase; and Pioneer High School Emergency Gymnasium Repair.

The recommended musical instrument purchase is for 18 Roland Electric Keyboards at a cost of $36,306 and one English Horn at a cost of $7,600. Funding will be provided from the 2015 Bond Fund.

Due to normal wear and tear, many of the Pioneer Marching Band Uniforms need to be replaced. The uniform purchase will cost $27,504.75 and will be paid out of the General Fund.

The 2015 Bond Advisory Committee recommended the purchase/replacement of auditorium equipment to ensure adequate functionality. The sound upgrades will not exceed a cost of $205,235.09. The contract will be funded from the 2015 Bond Fund.

Emergency repair and restoration was needed when a coil inside a rooftop HVAC unit at Pioneer froze and water leaked into the main gym, damaging the floor, weight room, and running track. The costs totaled $38,625.37. Due to the extent of the damage, the entire gym floor is scheduled to be refinished and painted during summer break in the total amount of $21,205. These services will be funded through an insurance claim, with the $10,000 deductible paid from the Sinking Fund.

The trustees will be voting tonight on the approval of the musical instrument purchase; the Pioneer band uniform purchase; the school auditorium sound system purchase; and the Pioneer emergency gymnasium repair. 018 sale of bonds; the approval of the communication & network maintenance contracts; the planetarium server replacement; and the 2018 purchase of school buses.
