AAPS Board Talks Gun Control; Student Suspensions Down

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (October 14, 2015): Forsythe Middle School auditorium

During the regular meeting, beginning at 7:00 PM, the trustees will hear the annual report on student conduct and discipline, as well as a briefing on action taken by the district on Senate Bill 442, which would allow for concealed carry of guns in gun-free zones.

Representative Jeff Irwin will be present to speak about recent legislation moving through the Michigan legislature.

Voting tonight will be on the Red & Ed catalog contract, the locksmith services contract, and the Huron Auditorium air handling unit replacement contract.

AAPS Board Amends Contracts; Celebrates the Start of the School Year

Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting (September 16, 2015): Forsythe Middle School auditorium

The board is holding an executive session at 5:30 PM requested by Superintendent Jeanice Swift for strategy and negotiation sessions connected with a collective bargaining agreement.

During the regular meeting, the board will hear several reports, meet recently hired administrators, and review board goals for 2015-16. They will vote on the Pediatric Therapy Associates contract, the financial institutions approval list, and a contract amendment. AAPS BOE Retreat Focuses on Increasing Student Voice, Improving Community Relations

Mary Morgan, co-founder of The CivCity Initiative and The Ann Arbor Chronicle, attended the August 26 continuation of the Ann Arbor Public School’s Board of Education retreat. Her coverage of the meeting is below.

All trustees, except for Board President Deb Mexicotte, were present at the 3:30 PM retreat continuation.

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, the AAPS board continued its retreat from Aug. 19. They met from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the principal’s conference room at Pioneer High School, prior to an executive session at 5:30 and a regular board meeting at 7 p.m. Board president Deb Mexicotte was absent. All other trustees attended the retreat, as did superintendent Jeanice Swift.

During the retreat, the board reached consensus that reports from associations – which are currently delivered at each board meeting – will be given only at the first meeting of each month, rather than at each meeting. There will be a new 4-minute time limit on each report.
